The simple and loving heart of her childhood

Lastly, she pictured herself how this same little sister of hers would…be herself a grown woman; and how she would keep…the simple and loving heart of her childhood; and…gather about her other little children, and make their eyes bright and eager with many a strange tale, perhaps even with a dream of Wonderland of long ago; and how she would feel with all their simple sorrows, and find pleasure in all their simple joys, remembering her own child-life, and the happy summer days.

While quilting is a new adventure for me, I have always been drawn to quilts and to fabric.  Some of my earliest childhood memories involve a simple quilt, made from a fabric panel and backed with quite possibly the softest piece of flannel on earth.  It was given to me shortly after my birth in 1984 and I know not who made it, but I love it.

This was the blanket I took with me to kindergarten for nap time, this was the blanket I snuggled with on long road trips, the blanket that covered my legs while I watched Saturday morning cartoons, the blanket that dried many tears (whether crocodile or not), and it was the blanket that I still take out today when I wish to remember my own childhood.

It was also the “quilt” that started it all…my fanaticism for fabric.  Little did I know that I would end up making my own quilts someday, but I remember tracing the quilted outlines with my pudgy little finger as a girl.

Fast forward about 20 years (geez, am I really getting that old already?), and this was when I really began my devotion to fabric.  Having just graduated from college and faced with planning my wedding, an entire world of possibilities opened up to me.  With a simple addition of fabrics, one could transform the “look” of their wedding.   Just ask my bridesmaids…I think I had 4 or 5 different dressed picked out for them before I found the “one.”  Now, what I should tell you is, that the “one” ended up being a black strapless A-line dress with a silver sash…nothing to write home about.

BUT…after many trips to JoAnn’s I was fascinated by buying fabric.  Not to mention, I actually had a “grown-up” job that would pay for my habit.  And then, someone introduced me to the magical world of quilt shops.  Bolt after bolt of the most luscious fabrics in the brightest colors imaginable.  I was in heaven!  Now, if only I could quilt…
