Many Mini Moderns Blocks (3MB): Fabric Requirements

Surprise, surprise…a sampler quilt with no clearly defined fabric requirements.  This is an excellent project to dig into your stash.  Here’s the fabric selections I picked out:

Aqua selections: 6 1/2 yard fabric cuts, 5 fat quarters, and a handful of charm squares

Coral selections: 7 1/2 yard cuts, a fistful of charm squares and some leftover binding strips from another project .

Neutral selections: I’ll be using natural linen in most of my blocks and for the sashing, plus I have 4 other 1/2 yard cuts and a couple of neutral charms to throw into the bunch.

Yellow selections: 7 1/2 yard cuts, 5 fat quarters, and of course…a few more charms to boot!

Be sure to post your fabric selections to the Flickr group!  Enjoy!

Many Mini Modern Blocks (3MB): Picking a Color Palette

With a book chock full of so many great designs from so many great quilty minds, you’re bound to have a large variety of blocks.  One way to add cohesiveness to your blocks is to pick a single color palette to follow for each block you create.  This is what I’m planning on doing, but the great news is…no rules here!

One of my favorite things about quilting is that you don’t have to follow any rules but one: create a quilt you’ll love!  So if you don’t want to pick a color palette…don’t!  Maybe blocks in a wide array of colors suits your style perfectly, so go for it!

Everyone’s designs can be viewed on Flickr so head over to see what everyone is up to!

Already a little overwhelmed with all of the blocks and now in a state of panic that you need to pick a color palette too?  Believe me, I’ve been there.  My husband thinks I’m crazy for putting this together because I may have had a few mini breakdowns along the way in the planning.  I guess if you don’t quilt, 100 blocks seems like a lot 🙂

One of the best sites I’ve found for color palette inspiration is Design Seeds.  If you’re like me, you can spend hours on this site browsing through the beautiful pictures and their corresponding inspired color palettes.  Here’s a few color palettes which pointed me in the right direction to choosing my fabric choices:

With the help of these color palettes and a little inspiration of my own, I created a color palette for my quilt which includes:

Pale Yellow

More on the colors tomorrow in the post on fabric requirements.  Stay tuned!

The Official Many Mini Modern Blocks QAL Announcement!

So here it is…2012!  They say that the years go faster the older you get and I can certainly attest to that! I feel like it should still be summertime.   Where did the time go?  Hmm…maybe the hours I’ve spent lost in my sewing room and LQS could account for much of it…

To ring in the new year, I’m happy to make the official Many Mini Modern Blocks Quilt Along!!!!

This is the first quilt along I’ve hosted and I’m looking forward to the challenge.  If you haven’t already purchased a copy of this amazing book Modern Blocks you’ll need it for the QAL.  No instructions will be provided, that’s what the book is for.  But I will be posting the adjusted math to make 6 1/2″ unfinished blocks rather than the 12 1 /2″ blocks described in the book.  If you’re like me, doing the math is the hard part…and now it’s done for you!

The finished project will be a sampler quilt with all 99 blocks plus 1 uniquely designed by you!  10 x 10 blocks plus sashing and border will yield a quilt 75″ x75″ just in time for a late summer picnic!

Each Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday I’ll be posting for the QAL, so we’ll be doing three blocks a week.  What’s 99 blocks when you’re just doing three a week!

So here’s the schedule for this week:

Monday: Official Announcement

Tuesday: Picking a Color Palette

Wednesday: Fabric Requirements

Tomorrow I’ll get the Flickr group up and running and will have the button posted for everyone to grab.

Happy New Year!
